A Mike Perry Tribute

This animation was inspired by the ever-evolving animated intros for the Comedy Central series Broad City. Animator, illustrator and artist Mike Perry, creates new and captivatingly fun intros for every Broad City episode; the intros have become an integral part of the show experience. Viewers anticipate and look forward to the fresh animation as much as they do each episode.

Perry draws each frame with pencil, then scans and uploads the drawings to Adobe Photoshop where he colors them in, and then passes them off to coworker Julie, who edits the animation to sync with the theme song.

For my interpretive re-creation, I developed graphics to be directly similar to ones that Perry created across episodes, and created my own graphics while emulating Perry stylistically.

I drew each frame, 95 in total, in Adobe Illustrator and strung them together/brought them to life using Adobe After Effects. I paired the finished product with the song “Bongo Bong” by Manu Chao, when I realized that part of the intros’ buoyant, staccato charm is embedded in the series theme song, “Latino & Proud” by DJ Raff. Because I added “Bongo Bong” later in the creative process, it does not rhythmically sync with the frames AS effectively as I would like. However, if you have watched Broad City, you know that a bit of dissonant dysfunction is not off-brand.
